Decode Food Expiration Dates
It’s hard to understand what the date on your food actually means. To avoid tossing out edible food, or hanging on to spoiled food, follow these tips. The sell-by date refers to the last day a retailer can display a product for sale. Typically, food is safe to eat for 10 days after the sell-by date if refrigerated properly. The use-by date refers to the last day a product will maintain its optimum freshness, flavor and texture. Beyond this date, the product begins to deteriorate and lose its nutritional value, although it is still edible. Finally, there is the expiration date, which means that if you haven’t used a product by this date, toss it.
