Choosing a Smoke Alarm
While smoke alarms can be powered electrically, by battery or by a combination of both, they come in three main types. Ionization alarms quickly sense flaming fires. Photoelectric alarms are better for detecting smoke itself. You can also purchase a combination alarm that is both photoelectric and ionization. To best protect your home and family, use both photoelectric and ionization alarms or a combination alarm. If you or a family member is deaf, you can buy smoke alarms with strobe lights. Make sure any smoke alarm you purchase has a label from a recognized testing laboratory.
