How often should you change the filter on your heating and AC system, and why?

There are many ways you can increase the quality of your indoor air. This starts with the air filtration and the way you would use your heating and air conditioning system.

The type of filtration system you have will dictate how often it should be changed or cleaned. Assuming normal, everyday use, a standard air filter should be monitored for dirt and changed as needed, usually about once every 60 days. A system with a high efficiency air filter will need to be changed more often because it collects more dirt and particles.

An electronic or electrostatic filter will need to be cleaned at least once every 30 days, as it collects even more dirt and particulates from the air. The bottom line, you should check it once every 30 days. If it’s dirty, then clean it.

As mentioned, there are several ways to improve the indoor air quality for those who suffer allergies and breathing disorders. It is not simply a question on how often should a filter be changed, but what can be done to improve the quality of air in the house. You can purchase devices that filter the air in up to a 12×12 square foot area, or you can install a system that filters the air throughout the entire house. A whole house system will keep the heating and air system clean while improving the indoor air quality and system efficiency.
